Home Sweet Home in Coober Pedy

Are there people living underground? Yes, there are, and they live comfortably there. Do you know where that is? Only in Coober Pedy!

Coober Pedy is a very small town in South Australia, about halfway between Adelaide and Alice Springs. It is referred to as the "opal capital of the world" because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. It is notable for its below-ground residences, called "dugouts", which are built due to severe desert climate. The name 'Coober Pedy' comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means 'white man's hole'.

Coober Pedy is perhaps one of the rarest places in the world. A considerable number of people of varied nationalities are living there. It offers a relaxing, peaceful and unique lifestyle of underground living. Only there that you can see authentic underground homes as well as underground art galleries, opal mines, churches, hotels, and even a bookstore.

Extraordinary Design of European Trucks

These trucks have extraordinary design. At first glance, you can think that their other side is missing or see-through showing the products they are hauling where in fact it's not, for they are only painted on each side and on the back.

In this design, the cases of softdrinks seemed to be magnetized on the ceiling. Obviously, this truck is hauling PEPSI products. It's amazing, isn't it?

Another design shows a bottle of beer which seemed to go out of the side. It really looks real.

World's Extraordinary Gigantic Flowers

Flowers are naturally beautiful and attractive. Most of them are used for decorations whether at home, churches, offices and many more; and they are used too in occasions like wedding, birthdays, valentines, etc. Men also give flowers to women to show their affection. But can you imagine if the flowers in these photos will be used for decorations or to be given to wives or girlfriends? Get to know each of them and see if they fit.

Rafflesia arnoldii, one of the national flowers in Indonesia, is a parasitic plant. It's noted for producing the largest flower on earth that can grow over three feet across. The flower is a fleshy color, with spots that make it look like a teenager's acne-ridden skin. It smells bad, that's why it is nicknamed as "corpse flower". It has a hole in the center that holds six or seven quarts of water. The plant has no leaves, stems, or roots.

What comes into your mind when you see these flowers? It is Hydnora africana, an unusual flesh-colored, parasitic flower that attacks the nearby roots of shrubby in arid deserts of South Africa.The putrid-smelling blossom attracts herds of carrion beetles.

This burgundy-colored flower is called Dracunculus vulgaris. It smells like rotting flesh, and has a burgundy-colored, leaf-like flower that projects a slender, black appendage which, for me, also looks like a an eggplant.

Another rare gigantic flower is known as Amorphophallus. It comes from the Greek words amorphos which means "without form" and phallos which means "penis". In short, it literally means "shapeless penis." The name comes from the shape of the erect black spadix.

They are extraordinary, aren't they? They are really unlike the common flowers that we know which simply have petals and other parts and which also have fragrant smell. But even though, they are similarly attractive.

Heart-warming Story of Two Dog Pals

Who among us would willingly sacrifice for the sake of other's welfare? Who among us would unconditionally offer a helping hand to less fortunate people? Well, let's try to evaluate ourselves about this matter. Perhaps we are one of those who would or those who wouldn't.

A story of two dogs touched my heart and made me realize the virtue of helping one another. It also taught me the importance of friendship. Though they are of different breeds, still they have been great real friends!

These two buddies have been inseparable since Lily (left), a Great Dane, had lost her sight. Maddison (right), a canine, is her kind-hearted friend.

Maddison turned to be the guide of Lily so that she would know where to go. They are very close to each other; they enjoy each other's company.

Madisson is a true friend whom Lily can count on. She is there to help her friend to live normally despite her pitiful situation. We can see in them a lasting friendship --a friendship that will stand despite the adversities. Though they are only animals, they teach us great lessons.

World's Scary and Strange Phenomena

There are some happenings which are beyond our control, and somehow are difficult to explain. Some of them are the different phenomena of the world. Perhaps, you already noticed some of them, but you are only unaware of what they are. I will introduce you some...

Light Pillars

Light pillars appear as eerily upright luminous columns in the sky, beacons cast into the air above without an apparent source.These are visible when light reflects just right off of ice crystals from either the sun (as in the two top images above) or from artificial ground sources such as street or park lights. Despite their appearance as near-solid columns of light,the effect is entirely created by our own relative viewpoint.

Sundogs

Like light pillars, sundogs are the product of light passing through crystals.The particular shape and orientation of the crystals can have a drastic visual impact for the viewer, producing a longer tail and changing the range of colors one sees. The relative height of the sun in the sky shifts the distance the sundogs appear to be on either side of the sun. Varying climactic conditions on other planets in our solar system produce halos with up to four sundogs from those planets' perspectives. Sundogs have been speculated about and discussed since ancient times and written records describing the various attributes of our sun date back the Egyptians and Greeks.

Orange Moons
This last phenomena is something most people have seen before - beautiful orange moon hanging low in the sky. But what causes this phenomena - and, for that matter, does the moon have a color at all? When the moon appears lower on the horizon, rays of light bouncing off it have to pass through a great deal more of our atmosphere which slowly strips away everything but yellows, oranges and reds. The bottom most image above is true to the hues of the moon but has enhanced colors to more clearly show the differences in shade that illustrate the mixed topography and minerology that tell the story of the moon's surface. Looking at the colors in combination with the craters one can start to trace the history of impacts and consequent material movements across the face of our mysterious moon.

Lenticular Clouds

Ever wonder the truth about UFO's? Avoided by traditional pilots but loved by sailplane aviators, lenticular clouds are masses of cloud with strong internal uplift that can drive a motorless flyer to high elevations. Their shape is quite often mistaken for a mysterious flying object or the artificial cover for one. Generally, lenticular clouds are formed as wind speeds up while moving around a large land object such as a mountain.

Ice Circles

While many see these apparently perfect ice circles as worthy of conspiracy theorizing, scientists generally accept that they are formed by eddies in the water that spin a sizable piece of ice in a circular motion. As a result of this rotation, other pieces of ice and flotsam wear relatively evenly at the edges of the ice until it slowly forms into an essentially ideal circle. Ice circles have been seen with diameters of over 500 feet and can also at times be found in clusters and groups of different sizes as shown above.

Columnar Basalt

When a thick lava flow cools, it contracts vertically but cracks perpendicular to its directional flow with remarkable geometric regularity - in most cases forming a regular grid of remarkable hexagonal extrusions that almost appear to be made by man. One of the most famous such examples is the Giant's Causeway on the coast of Ireland (shown above), though the largest and most widely recognized would be Devil's Tower in Wyoming. Basalt also forms different but equally fascinating ways when eruptions are exposed to air or water.

Blue Holes

Blue holes are giant and sudden drops in underwater elevation that get their name from the dark and foreboding blue tone they exhibit when viewed from above in relationship to surrounding waters. They can be hundreds of feet deep and while divers are able to explore some of them they are largely devoid of oxygen that would support sea life due to poor water circulation - leaving them eerily empty. Some blue holes, however, contain ancient fossil remains that have been discovered, preserved in their depths.

Mammatus Clouds

True to their ominous appearance, mammatus clouds are often harbingers of a coming storm or other extreme weather system. Typically composed primarily of ice, they can extend for hundreds of miles in each direction and individual formations can remain visibly static for ten to fifteen minutes at a time. While they may appear foreboding they are merely the messengers - appearing around, before or even after severe weather.

Penitentes

Named after peak-hooded New Mexican monks (lower right above), penitentes are dazzling naturally-forming ice blades that stick up at sharp angles toward the sun. Rarely found except at high altitudes, they can grow up taller than a human and form in vast fields. As ice melts in particular patterns, 'valleys' formed by initial melts leave 'mountains' in their wake. Strangely, these formations ultimately slow the melting process as the peaks cast shadows on the deeper surfaces below and allow for winds to blow over the peaks, cooling them.

Sinkholes

Sinkholes are one of the world's scariest natural phenomena. Over time, water erodes the soil under the planet's surface until in some cases, quite suddenly, the land above gives way and collapses into the earth. Many sinkholes occur naturally while others are the result of human intervention. Displacing groundwater can open cavities while broken pipes can erode otherwise stable subterranean sediments. Urban sinkholes, up to hundreds of feet deep have formed and consumed parts of city blocks, sidewalks and even entire buildings.

Fire Rainbows

A circumhorizontal fire rainbow arc occurs at a rare confluence of right time and right place for the sun and certain clouds. Crystals within the clouds refract light into the various visible waves of the spectrum but only if they are arrayed correctly relative to the ground below. Due to the rarity with which all of these events happen in conjunction with one another, there are relatively few remarkable photos of this phenomena.

Sailing Stones

The mysterious moving stones of the packed-mud desert of Death Valley have been a center of scientific controversy for decades. Rocks weighing up to hundreds of pounds have been known to move up to hundreds of yards at a time. Some scientists have proposed that a combination of strong winds and surface ice account for these movements. However, this theory does not explain evidence of different rocks starting side by side and moving at different rates and in disparate directions. Moreover, the physics calculations do not fully support this theory as wind speeds of hundreds of miles per hour would be needed to move some of the stones.

Red Tides

Red tides are also known as algal blooms - sudden influxes of massive amounts of colored single-cell algae that can convert entire areas of an ocean or beach into a blood red color. While some of these can be relatively harmless, others can be harbingers of deadly toxins that cause the deaths of fish, birds and marine mammals. In some cases, even humans have been harmed by red tides though no human exposure are known to have been fatal. While they can be fatal, the constituent phytoplankton in ride tides are not harmful in small numbers.

Cute Babies Compete in Crying Contest

This is inevitably funny...

Most mothers worry if their young children cry. They even try to coax the baby to stop from crying.

But did you know that in Japan, babies are intentionally forced to cry? Since it has been their tradition for hundreds of years, parents would willingly join their toddlers in the so-called Naki Sumo, a crying contest.

Japanese parents bring the babies to the contest and truly believe that sumo induced crying keeps their children in good health, and wards off evil spirits.

In this contest, amateur sumo wrestlers try to scare the baby by holding him high in the air.

The toddler who cries longest and loudest will be declared the winner.

The more the babies cry, the cuter they look...the more people laugh... Naku sumo is a baby crying festival in Japan. Weird.

Fantastic Revelation of Some Logos

You may wonder how and why are logos made. They are actually for identification. Most of them are made simple but memorable; and despite the simplicity, they convey meaning that is derived from the quality of those which they symbolize. The following logos have revelations in themselves. Scroll down and find out...

Unilever is one of the biggest producers of food, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products. Their logo is letter U, the initial of the company's name. But it is not as simple as it looks because it took many shapes to form this letter. Each shape speaks something about a particular product offered by the company itself.

Designed by Professor Vaughan Pratt of the Stanford University, the Sun logo is one of the most famous ambigrams in the world. In it, you can read the brand name whether in vertical or horizontal direction.

Have you seen letters N and W? They are inside the circle.

But aside from these letters, you can also see the compass pointing to northwest, another reference to the brandname. Look again...

The logo is a green tree. But it isn't just a mere tree. Looking at its crown, you will notice that it resembles a brain. It symbolizes the intellectual capabilities of the firm's staff and to underscore their company's name.

What have you seen? Focus at the center. There you can see two persons sharing a piece of Tostito chip with a bowl of salsa. It conveys an idea of people connecting with each other.

Elefont has only letter "e" logo. This actually looks so simple; but try to look at it more closely and you will see a part of an elephant's trunk in its negative space.

The Milwaukee Brewers is a professional baseball team from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. That is why, as you can see, their logo also looks like a baseball glove. But actually they are letters M and B, the initials of the team's name.

Toblerone is a chocolate-company from Bern, Switzerland . Bern is sometimes called The City Of Bears . They have incorporated this idea in the Toblerone logo, because if you look closely, you'll see the silhouette of a bear.

The NBC (National Broadcasting Company) is one of the biggest American television networks. The logo shows six different tail feathers of a peacock that refer to the six divisions at the time that this logo was created. The peacock's head is flipped to the right to suggest it was looking forward, not back.

Every letter in this logo is formed number 8. This is simple yet memorable.

At first glance, you will only notice letter F and the red stripes in the logo.

But if you look closely in the negative space between them, you can see number 1.

It's the logo of Carrefour, one of the biggest European retailers and also the French for "crossroads". No wonder why in this logo, there are two arrows in opposite directions and the letter C between them.

This logo does not only contains letters B and R,

but also include 31 (in color pink), reference to the 31 flavors.

Roxy is a company that specializes in clothing and accessories for girls who love snowboarding, surfing. The company is actually a part of Quiksilver (right). The Roxy logo (left) is made of two Quiksilver logos that form a heart.

This logo also uses a negative space to create the letter H. You can see three different parts: the letter H and W and a whale's tail in blue.

This logo doesn't seem to hide much at first sight, but it gives you a little insight in the
philosophy behind the brand. First of all, the yellow swoosh looks like a smile:
Amazon wants to have the best customer satisfaction.
The swoosh also connects the letters a and z, meaning that this store has everything from a to z.

First Photograph 173 Years Ago (1838)

This photograph of Boulevard du Temple in Paris was made in 1838 by Louis Daguerre, the brilliant guy that invented the daguerreotype process of photography. Aside from its distinction of being a super early photograph, it’s also the first photograph to ever include a human being. Because the image required an exposure time of over ten minutes, all the people, carriages, and other moving things disappear from the scene. However, in the bottom left hand corner is a man who just so happened to stay somewhat still during the shot — he was having his shoes shined.

It’s interesting how sheer luck earned the guy a place in the history of photography. Too bad we’ll probably never know his identity.

Bee-wearing Contest in China

A"bee-attracting" competition in China 's Hunan province pitted two fearless bee keepers, Lu Kongjiang (above) and Wang Dalin against one another

Wearing only a pair of shorts and with a queen bee they reared to attract the swarms, the competitors stood on a weighing scale so the judges could determine who attracted more bees.

The Guinness Book of Records has a category for "most pounds of bees worn on the body," reportedly held by US animal trainer Mark Biancaniello who attracted 39.5 kilos (87lb) of bees onto his body.

Mr. Wang (above) won the competition after he attracted 26 kg (57lb) of bees onto his body in 60 minutes. His opponent was engulfed by a mere 22.9 kg (50lb), local media reported.

(CNN) - A 19-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly trying to sneak her husband out of prison in a suitcase, according to authorities in the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo.

According to officials at the prison in the city of Chetumal, the state's capital, the woman identified as Maria del Mar Arjona was caught as she was leaving the prison, pulling a black-wheeled suitcase.

Authorities said that as she was walking up a staircase to leave the prison, Arjona hit the suitcase against the stairs. When something inside the bulky suitcase moved, guards noticed and stopped Arjona, who acted nervously. The guards then looked inside the suitcase and found her husband, Juan Ramirez Tijerina.

Cesar Manuel Castilla, a spokesman for Quintana Roo's Department of Public Safety, says that in any case it would have been extremely difficult for the inmate to escape in the suitcase.

"We have three inspection stations at the prison and he was caught in the first one," Castilla said. "In any case, she would have been asked to open the suitcase for inspection at the third and last inspection station. I don't know what they were thinking."

Pictures of the incident released by Quintana Roo's Department of Public Safety show the man curled up inside the suitcase in a fetal position. He was covering his face when the pictures where taken.

Ramirez is serving a sentence at the Chetumal prison after being convicted of federal drug trafficking charges.

He was immediately returned to his cell while Arjona was detained. She now faces multiple charges stemming from the Saturday incident. According to Castilla, Arjona is six months pregnant. She fell ill after being detained. Charges and a court appearance are pending while she recovers at a state hospital.

Arjona was at the prison for a conjugal visit, Castilla said.

NEW YORK—Just weeks after his body was buried at sea, Osama bin Laden burst forth from the ocean depths early this morning, rising to the monstrous height of 500 feet and rapidly making his way down the East Coast of the United States in a rampage expected to leave hundreds of thousands dead and easily eclipse 9/11 as the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history.

Currently, much of New York City and Washington, D.C., including the Empire State Building, the White House, and the Capitol Building, lay in ruins, with overwhelmed rescue crews struggling to assist a country ravaged by the gigantic, irate al-Qaeda leader.

"Our nation faces its gravest challenge yet," a visibly shaken President Obama said, interrupting his prepared remarks to both houses of British Parliament in London. "I cannot say that we will prevail, only that we will fight to the last."

"May God help us all," Obama added as the walls and ceiling shook around him.

Citizens look on in terror as the massive bin Laden destroys New York City with ease.

The first stirrings of bin Laden were felt in the form of early morning tremors off the Atlantic Coast that reportedly rattled windows as far inland as Ohio. Shortly thereafter, stunned witnesses from a nearby fishing vessel reported that bin Laden, in full robes and with a beard described as "at least 100 feet long," suddenly rose from beneath the water.

Within an hour, a formidable assembly of U.S. fighter jets and battleships began engaging bin Laden approximately 25 miles off the Atlantic Coast, an encounter officials conceded has so far done nothing to slow the progress of the colossal terrorist mastermind. On the contrary, sources are reporting that bin Laden seems to be absorbing the bombardment and growing both angrier and, shockingly, larger with each strike.

By the time the unscathed bin Laden entered New York Harbor and flung the

Statue of Liberty into Lower Manhattan, some estimates put his height at 800 feet.

"He seemed to feed off our weaponry," Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen said.

"Everything we did to hurt him only seemed to nourish him. We pounded him with enough shells to destroy a small country, and it just made him stronger."

"I don't know how we stop him," Mullen continued. "I just don't know."

When Bin Laden reached land, he reportedly headed straight for Ground Zero, where witnesses said he seemed to emit a low gurgling chuckle before howling "Death to the infidels!" and tearing apart the steel superstructure of the partially built tower at One World Trade Center. After crushing nearby Trinity Church, which had inspired many by surviving 9/11 relatively undamaged, bin Laden made his way north, his gargantuan sandaled feet trampling buildings and growing slick with blood as he stomped upon the many residents who were unable to evacuate in time.

Maria Kushner, one of the lucky few to escape via the Coast Guard vessels arrayed along the East River, told reporters she looked back to land and saw bin Laden using the Empire State Building as a club to pulverize the U.N.'s headquarters.

"There were all these soldiers shooting at him, but he was relentless," Kushner said. "Just smashing and smashing. It's like he killed 3,000 people on 9/11 and finally came back for everyone else."

"Isn't that fucker supposed to be dead?" added Kushner, who told reporters she would never forget looking out her office window on the 72nd story of a Midtown skyscraper and seeing nothing but bin Laden's enormous eye looking back at her. "Why isn't he dead?"

Shortly before noon, bin Laden had left a trail of carnage through most of the Mid-Atlantic states, often scooping up helpless motorists from jammed highways and devouring them by the handful. As he entered Washington, D.C., sources said the terrifying giant, who had been pounded by combat forces all morning, had grown to twice his original height and stood close to 1,000 feet tall.

Although prime targets in the nation's capital had been evacuated by the time bin Laden arrived, military forces could do nothing but watch as bin Laden flipped the Pentagon 50 feet in the air, swatted the Capitol dome into the Potomac, and, with eerie deliberateness and precision, held his palm over the White House and slowly flattened it.

In a statement posted on a militant website, al-Qaeda celebrated the devastation and said the United States was paying the price for not heeding its warning.

"We have said that Osama bin Laden, may God have mercy on him, would be far mightier dead than alive," the statement read. "Did you fools really think we were talking about martyrdom or something? Really, how could you not see this coming?"

At press time, bin Laden had reduced most of Charlottesville, VA to rubble as he headed southeast, presumably toward SEAL Team Six headquarters near Virginia Beach.
